Message from President Leslie
I’m writing this on the day we celebrate and honor the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. and his work towards social, racial and economic justice. Only three weeks into this new year and we are being challenged to speak out for justice.
During the past three days, along with many others from All Souls Church, I attended the music session with the Good Trouble Street Choir singing songs of protest and solidarity, the NAACP Freedom Fund Brunch, hearing inspiring speakers, the protest against escalation towards war at Pliny Park, and then returned home to make soup for the Sister District Project which raises funds for progressive candidates running for state-level offices. I write this not to pat myself on the back but to remember that each of these activities was done in community and that was a joy.
And yes, there have been other demands – grocery shopping, laundry, meal preparation, shoveling, committee meetings, work and volunteer deadlines…. I know that others have similar responsibilities and commitments.
So with all there is to do and with the challenges of the day why am I concerned about Bylaws? And why am I asking you to think about them as well?
Bylaws are crucial for UU congregations as they provide the essential legal and operational framework, aligning our community’s practices with our mission, ensuring member rights, guiding leadership, and maintaining compliance, thereby fostering stability and focusing efforts
on spiritual growth and social justice. Bylaws serve as a binding agreement, defining purpose, decision-making, and management for our free, self-governing congregation. Our Bylaws were last amended in 2011 and much has changed since that time and it is helpful when our documents reflect current realities. Clear Bylaws can free us to focus on mission through worship, community building and social action.
So, I invite you to come to the Informational Meeting about proposed revision of the Bylaws and if you are a voting member to come to the Congregational Meeting to vote on adoption of revised Bylaws. If you are unable to be present at this meeting (in person or on Zoom), please contact Kay Curtis, ASC Clerk, regarding designation of a proxy who will vote on your behalf.
May we grow together in faith, Leslie
