(Elijah Eugene Cummings (January 18, 1951–October 17, 2019) served in the United States House of Representatives for Maryland’s 7th congressional district from 1996 until his death. He was a politician and civil rights advocate. He quoted this poem in his inaugural speech to the House, saying that he said the poem sometimes 20 times a day, that it was a very simple poem, but one that he lived by.)
